Ukraine Update
The Rev. Balázs Ódor, Ecumenical Officer for the Reformed Church in Hungary, has been in direct contact with the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh and they have been able to contact the Bishop’s Office in the Reformed Church in Carpathian Ukraine, and some congregations in Ukraine. It is good to take just a little time to do this, so that the right kind of help is given in a way in which it can be used on the ground where it is needed most.
From these contacts, we suggest that members are offered the opportunity to give, via the Church of Scotland, to Reformed Church in Hungary Aid (RCHA), which is run by our partner, the Reformed Church of Hungary. The RCHA has access to the Reformed church in Ukraine who are using their buildings to support the people moving from east to west as they seek safety and sanctuary. They are also working in the border areas of Hungary, Slovakia and Romania using the Reformed Church contacts and buildings there.
They are providing daily updates and you can see more Information here: https://reformatus.hu/english/news/emergency-response-for-ukraine/
Though RCHA you can support those fleeing from the east and coming to the west of Ukraine where they can be helped through the churches there; those in the west already who don’t have access to their money when the banks run out and who will need food/help; and those who cross the borders into Hungary, Slovakia or Romania.
Your donations can be directed to the following account:

Church of Scotland No 1 Account
Account no 00134859
Sort code 83 06 08

Please gift aid this if possible.

Assistant Minister:
Rev. Edson Duque de Castro, B.A., B.D., M.Sc.R.
In early December 2021 we welcomed Edson a Minister from the Brazilian Presbyterian Church along with his wife and two sons. For 15 months they will work with us in a period of ‘familiarisation’ as Edson learns about our Church and culture, before he hopes to minister in Scotland permanently. Edson was ordained in his Church in 1999 so already brings a lot of experience from San Paolo in Brazil. Edson in his spare time likes to spend time with his family, to run, go to the cinema, read poetry, camp and fish!

Jim Scott, our Session Clerk, tendered his resignation to the Kirk Session on 23rd November 2021, after 8 years, which the Session reluctantly accepted.

UPDATE FROM SPRINGFIELD CAMBRIDGE FESTIVAL CHORUS AND ORCHESTRA
Guild Projects
The Guild Leadership team identifies 6 projects to be supported over a three year cycle and between 2018 to 2021 the six are – The Boys’ Brigade, Crossreach, Seema’s Project, Growing the Future, Sailor’s Society and World Mission Council. More information about these Projects can be found on the Church of Scotland/Guild webpage.
Each local branch of the Guild can select which of the projects it wishes to support and Springfield Cambridge Guild supported The Boys’ Brigade, Crossreach and the Seema Project from 2018 to 2020. However there have been no Guild meetings since March, 2020 so no fund raising at our Martha Table, Coffee morning or Hostess Tea. However the sale of home made jam in the summer stimulated donations for the projects and for Valentine’s Day we were encouraged by the national leadership team to show our love by sharing a virtual soup lunch and making a donation to the Projects. Our Guild offered the opportunity to members to send their donation via our treasurer, Irene Smillie and to enter a competition for the most exotic soup recipe.
I am delighted to report that we are now able to send £660.05 to Guild Office and wish to thank the members for their tremendous generosity. Thank you also to Irene for taking on this extra work.
Ellen Robertson.
The winner of the exotic soup recipe prize is Moira Aitken photographed here eating her delicious Coral Soup.
Well done Moira.

Heartfelt Thanks from the Lodging House Mission
Dear Rev Taylor,
Heartfelt Thanks from the Lodging House Mission
I am writing to acknowledge and thank you and your congregation at Springfield Cambridge Church for the generous donation of £188.15, transferred to our bank, to assist us in our work with homeless, vulnerable and socially excluded persons at the Lodging House Mission here in Glasgow. These are unusual times as Covid-19 causes our service to adapt.
In line with 2021 Government ‘stay at home’ guidance, our day centre remains closed to the public, in order to prevent social gathering. Our volunteers will remain at home during this time. A limited number of our staff team will be working hard to continue to meet our mission commitments and support those who are experiencing homelessness, who may be vulnerable or are experiencing isolation at this time. Through local and National Government temporary accommodation is available during this ’stay at home’ order for all who require it.
We will, therefore, continue to make available emergency food parcels, essential toiletries packs and supply emergency clothing through our partner agencies, who are delivering these to those most in need in: hostels, hotels and Bed and Breakfast accommodation in the city. We will continue to supply lunch and other provisions as required to the Glasgow Overnight Welcome Centre and our Chaplaincy phone line (07864 705 668) remains available for support, prayer and bereavement conversations.
We know none of this would be possible if it were not for the support and prayers of congregations such as yourselves, so please accept our heartfelt thanks and as we look forward to 2021, we would appreciate your continued support in the year that lies ahead. May God bless you as you have blessed the least of these brothers and sisters of Christ. (Matthew 25:40)
Yours Sincerely

WOMEN’S AID APPEAL
Letter from our Minister, Rev. Ian Taylor
FRESH START – WOMEN’S AID APPEAL
As a congregation we have a long standing connection in supporting the work of Fresh Start.
Usually we can leave donated goods (new pillows, bedding etc.) in the Church but this is not possible at the moment.
Recently they have experienced a high volume of referrals and as they are unable to collect goods or fundraise because of Covid19 the situation is growing more serious by the day.
We have been asked if we can support this project by making monetary donations on Sundays 15th & 22nd November 2020. Your donations will then be used to purchase Asda, Tesco gift cards for Fresh Start to allow them to purchase goods.
Donations can be brought to Church on either of these Sundays if you are able to attend one of our Services.
Alternatively these can be sent directly to Jim Kerr (0141 772 6015) our Church Treasurer made payable to Springfield Cambridge Church but clearly marked for the FRESH START – WOMEN’S AID APPEAL.
Thank you for your continued generosity.
Rev. Ian Taylor.

SPRINGFIELD CAMBRIDGE FESTIVAL CHORUS AND ORCHESTRA
In a normal year, many of you would by now have been scrambling to get tickets for our annual Christmas Concert.
The year 2020 is very different. Because of the worries and restrictions due to the ongoing Covid 19 situation, there will be no Christmas Concert in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall this year.
However, there will be a VIRTUAL event at 7.30 pm on Monday 21 December 2020.
This will be streamed live on YouTube, for 1 night only, and there will be an opportunity for everyone to donate to CHAS, through the “Just Giving” website or by text from a smart phone. Both options will allow for the addition of Gift Aid, where applicable. Anyone who does not have access to the internet or a smart phone will be able to donate by cheque.
Alan Craig, our Musical Director, has set up a website dedicated to the Event and has produced a video to promote it. A promotional flyer has also been produced.
You will find Alan’s video via the following link:
http://www.springfieldchorus.com
Please share this link with friends and family, those who would usually attend our Christmas Concert and those who would not be able to attend but would wish to support CHAS.

A note from Robert Ditty:-
I had originally planted the pots and tubs of Spring bulbs and plants during October 2019 for display
outside at the front door of the Church just now April 2020, but, of course this was not possible during the present closure due to the
corona virus. I have however benefited by displaying them on my front doorstep at my house.
The last image is the display in the Hall of Fellowship from a previous year and are mainly artificial and Anne Harvey usually prepares
this display.

No praying in church buildings says public health official
Published on 24 March, 2020
A top public health official has said church buildings must be closed for prayers. Professor Jason Leitch, National Clinical Director of the Scottish Government, said the unprecedented directive will save lives during the Coronavirus crisis. The public health expert is encouraging people to do what they can to help the most vulnerable in society, while taking sensible precautions to avoid contracting or spreading Covid19. Prof Leitch is a committed Christian and he urged people to seek solace and strength in their faith.

COVID 19 update from our Minister
Often when parishioners are having a hard time I will end by saying something like, “Hang in there, keep the faith, and breathe!”
Now I am wondering if in these unusual and uncertain times I should simply be saying, “Take a deep breath and pray. “
That’s what I say to myself often these days. It is not a time to panic, but it is a time to be prudent and prepared. We are in uncharted water. Leadership in faith communities, educational institutions, hospitals, government, and our local community face difficult choices about how to address the complex challenges that the COVID-19, corona virus brings. Please pray for wisdom and courage.
Our anxiety rises with the spread of the corona virus and we worry. We are concerned about the impact of this disease on healthcare workers, vulnerable adults, the physically fragile, and the livelihoods of people. Our world feels uncertain, and it grows smaller, lonelier as we follow health protocols, practice social distancing, engage in self-isolation, and exercise necessary quarantine measures. I also want to acknowledge that we all have things we are grieving, large and small, life-altering or inconvenient. It all feels uncertain and unsettling.
Take a deep breath and pray.
In these uncertain times, we can, at this moment, recognise how connected we are to one another – a body of many members. Do you recall the Apostle Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 12:26 when he says, “If one member suffers, we all suffer together…”? This realisation shapes our actions in ways that foster goodness and compassion to expand our caring networks. Another realisation is our faith community isn’t found in a building but grounded in the love of God found in Jesus Christ. So, even though we can’t gather in-person, we will discover new ways to worship and minister together.
To that end, we are working to have an online worship Service available as soon as we can – we can’t worship in-person, but we can worship in Spirit from our collective homes. Information will be placed on our website (www.springfieldcambridge.org.uk). You can expect a short worship Service with prayer, Scripture, and a message. I look forward to worshipping with you, and yes, there may be some funny, perhaps awkward moments as we learn how to worship in this new way. I hope we will be able to add music and additional elements to our online worship experience in the coming weeks.
With the help of the Kirk Session, I hope to set up small caring groups. These groups will stay in phone contact to share words of care and encouragement and let me know about concerns or needs. We also are starting conversations about safe ways to deliver needed groceries or medicine to church members or neighbours.
The circumstances around this pandemic are ever-evolving. We have not been through anything like this before. We will need your help along the way, please – the way forward will take all of us.
Since I can’t physically be with you on Sundays, in your home, nursing homes, hospitals, etc., I will try and communicate with you more frequently through email messages, newsletters, our website, and other social media platforms – keeping Springfield Cambridge’s community connected.
· Based on the current recommendations of the Church Offices at 121 George Street, Edinburgh, the Church building is open Monday – Friday from 9am -1pm, as is normally the case, to provide a place for people to come and pray, if they wish and this is permissible, subject to all visitors observing robust hand hygiene.
· Worship Services are suspended until further notice. Limitations relating to Weddings and Funerals are likely to be applied in the near future, but this is an ever fast changing picture.
· Payment for all staff and steps for their health and safety will continue.
· Our Church membership is encouraged to continue to support Springfield Cambridge with their giving and offerings by mail or ideally standing order.
So, please take a deep breath with me and pray and act as though you bear the love of Christ into the world for others—because you do.
Rev. Ian Taylor.

During the children’s address, Sonia encouraged the children to act out being in the fishing boat. The Gospel passage was….Luke 5:1-11 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
5 Once while Jesus[a] was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, 2 he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” 11 When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.
The children then returned to their halls and you can see from the photos they were very busy.
